The Confidence I Have in My Son’s Capabilities

So your 20 year old son goes MIA for over 4 months in Europe, no contact, plus family over there can’t reach him either. He also has very little presence on social media, so you can’t stalk him from there, to see how he’s doing.

Do you panic, or have you trained him on the Krav Maga overriding principle of “So that one may walk in peace”?

My perspective was: if something bad had happened, I’d have heard about it.
Then I think back to my late teens and 20s, I’d often vanish for months or even years at a time with no warning and no contact. My father would have no clue where I was or what I was doing (I’ve a strange feeling he kinda knew). Not only was there no social media, there was no internet (yeah that was a thing).

Sometimes I’d be in places with no phones; and often when I was, long distance would be like $5/min, fuck that shit. Looking back I often think “did I cause a lot of anxiety for my dad?”,

Yet whenever I appeared completely out of the blue, he’d seem completely unflustered, as though it was quite normal. So when my son appears completely out of the blue with a black eye in a Hollywood Boxing Gym with non other than the the legendary #FreddieRoach my first thought was “ah, to be expected”.

Seriously, how long would you wait for your 20 year old to be missing before you called the authorities:

  • A) one day?
  • B ) one week?
  • C) one month?
  • D) you wouldn’t because they’re a 20 year old adult, not a child?
